This isn't a surprise.

The guard and his cadre were going to war, and they didn’t care who it was with. He manufactured a crisis out of nothing, quickly escalating, until, in his mind, it could only be solved with the threat to use his firearm. Was it self-flatulating ego-stoking? His one chance to reinforce that he was essential and calling the shots (almost literally)? I couldn’t tell you. But he must have been trained to react this way. I wonder who he was taking the lead from?

This isn't a surprise. There's a strong and proud kinship between the military and the police, and they eventually live down to their reputations and stereotypes.
